The Ornament by Dredg The Ornament Live at the Fillmore Dredg tabbed by Brad ([email protected]) This is a beautiful, meditative piece from Dredg. The main lick from this song appeared on the Catch Without Arms CD, at the end of Matroshka. Since its recording on Catch Arms, the lick has evolved into more of a song. Whether or not it continues to be I do not know. It is, however, a great way to introduce a bit of calm after a really piece. I have tried to make the tab as easy to understand as possible without being cumbersome. are three sections in the song. There is the INTRO/VERSE, the INTERLUDE, and the OUTRO. INTRO/VERSE It's hard to define a time signature here, so listen to the recording for timing. Use delay and volume swells. Slide Guitar (0:00 to 0:31) Swells < > < > < > < > < > < > < > |e|---3-----10-----3-----10-----3-----10-----3---51/3------| |b|---------------------------------------------------------| |g|---------------------------------------------------------| |d|---------------------------------------------------------| |a|---------------------------------------------------------| |E|---------------------------------------------------------| Guitar (0:31 to 1:41) Mike is playing three distinct phrases throughout, all with heavy delay and what I think a phase effect. Guitar Phrase A e|---------------------------2---|-------------------------------| b|---3---------------------------|-------------------------------| g|-------------------------------|---4---------------------------| d|---------------------------0---|-------------------------------| a|---2---------------------------|-------------------------------| E|-------------------------------|---3---------------------------| . . . . . . . . Phrase Pattern AABA CBAA BAA Also, Dino is playing piano behind Mike's guitar at 0:44. The chords he is playing are D, and G. You can have another guitarist play these chords across the phrases for a effect. Piano (0:44 to 1:41) e|-------------------------------|-------------------------------| b|---3-----------------------7---|-------------------------------| g|-------------------------------|---4---------------------------| d|---4-----------------------7---|-------------------------------| a|---2-----------------------5---|---5---------------------------| E|-------------------------------|---3---------------------------| . . . . . . . . This is as as I've gotten without actually sitting in front of a piano and figuring it out. e|-------------------------------|-------------------------------| b|--------------------------12---|-------------------------------| g|---0----------------------11---|---4---------------7-------6---| d|--------------------------12---|-------------------------------| a|--------------------------10---|---5---------------------------| E|---0---------------------------|---3---------------------------| . . . . . . . . e|-------------------------------|---------------5---------5-----| b|-------------------7------10p7-|---------------5----------5----| g|---7---------------7----------9p7--6-----------6-----------6---| d|-------------------------------|---------------7------------7--| a|---9---------------9-------9---|---7-------7-------------------| E|-----------7-------------------|---5-------------------------5-| . . . . . . . . e|---------------------------19--|-------------------------------| b|------------------12-----------|-------------------------------| g|---0--------------11------16---|---4-----------7-------6-------| d|------------------12-----------|-------------------------------| a|------------------10-----------|---5---------------------------| E|---0---------------------------|---3---------------------------| . . . . . . . . e|-------------------------------|-------------------------------| b|-------------------------------|-------------------------------| g|---7---------------------------|---9--------------11p9-7---8---| d|-------------------------------|-------------------------------| a|---9---------------------------|-------------------------------| E|---7---------------------------|-------------------------------| . . . . . . . . OUTRO Slide Guitar (2:06 to 2:32) Then Gavin really works a single A on the 1st string for a while, finally sliding up on volume swell towards the end of the section. e|----------3----|---------------|---------------|---------------| b|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------| g|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------| d|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------| a|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------| E|---------------|---------------|---------------|---------------| Guitar (2:06 to 2:32) Mike continues playing the phrases from the verse section in this pattern: ACBB Slide Guitar (2:32 to end) Gavin does more volume swells over a couple slide notes, but the exact timing is Listen to the recording for help. Swells < > < > |e|---5------7-----| |b|----------------| |g|----------------| |d|----------------| |a|----------------| |E|----------------| Guitar (2:32 to end) Mike rapidly picks the 4th fret on the G string. e|---------------| b|---------------| g|-44444444444444 d|---------------| a|---------------| E|---------------| In the live recording, Gavin winds up for the next song, The Canyon Behind Her, on the fret of the 1st string (a high B). I do not play this note, but if you're being a for the recording, you might. That's about it for this song. Once you have the phrases and patterns down, there's not much to it. Best of luck!
